Proceedings of the Council of the City of Escanaba
April 7, 1888
The adjourned regular meeting of the council was held Saturday evening, April 7. Present: Mayor Semer, Aldermen Stephenson, Schram, Aspinall, Tyrrell, O'Brien, Fogarty, Dinneen, Corcoran. Minutes of the last meeting read, on motion approved.
The committee on electric light reported an ordinance granting the privilege of erecting, maintaining and operating an electric plant, to Moffett, Hodgkins & Clark. Alderman Aspinall made a motion that the ordinance be accepted.
Alderman Stephenson stated that Mr. Barr and Mr. Higgins were in the room in the interest of a home company asking privilege to put in and operate an electric plant, and asked that they be heard from.
Mr. Barr and Mr. Higgins were accorded the privilege of addressing the council.
Alderman O'Brien made an amendment to Alderman Aspinall's motion, that the electric light question be laid on the table until next meeting, that members of the Council may have time to study up the ordinance. Ayes, Schram, O'Brien, Dinneen, Fogarty, Corcoran, Stephenson, 6. Nays, Aspinall, Tyrrell, 2. Amendment carried.
The question was again revived and on motion of Alderman Aspinall laid on the table until next meeting. Ayes unanimous.

Chief Engineer Tolan reported names of member of hose companies and on motion of Alderman Fogarty the names were accepted. Ayes unanimous.
On motion of Alderman Fogarty, on appropriation to one hundred dollars each of three hose companies, as also one hundred dollars to Hook and Ladder Company was made. Ayes, Dinneen, O'Brien, Fogarty, Tyrrell, Schram, Corcoran, Stephenson. Nays, Aspinall.
Alderman Fogarty asked that the small building occupied as a barber-shop and owned by Mr. Finnegan, be allowed to stand on Campbell Street during the time occupied in the erection of Mr. Finnegan's new building, and on motion privilege was granted.
