ESCANABA AREA HOSPITALS AND SCHOOLS

Hospitals-1 general hospital with 110 beds, 3 nursing homes with a total of 267 beds.

Education-Delta-Schoolcraft Intermediate School District is a Regional Educational Service Agency which provides specialized types of programs and services in the areas of Special and Vocational Education too, and in cooperation with all Constituent School Districts and Parochial Schools in Delta and Schoolcraft Counties and throughout the Upper Peninsula. In addition, serves as an arm of Michigan Department of Education in providing many mandated services.School-to-work program has recently been added as a joint program between Michigan work and the ISD.Public Schools-Comprehensive K-12 Program with one senior high school, one junior high school and nine elementary schools with a total enrollment 3,858 K-12 students, 200 professional employees and a total valuation of over $250,000,000.

Bay de Noc Community CollegeBC04.jpg (55635 bytes), a two-year college, total enrollment of 2,175 (Fall, 1996). The college offers transfer programs, technical and occupational courses, certificate programs and associate degree programs in over 100 fields. Customized training programs can be set up as need arises and as registered by local industry. Cooperative programs leading to four-year degrees at Lake Superior State University and Northern Michigan University in Business Administration, Accounting, Marketing, Nursing, Engineering Management and a Masters' in Business Administration.

The Upper Peninsula Health Education Corporation (UPHEC)-the pre-doctoral program is a primary care medical education program that is jointly conducted by Michigan State University's College of Human Medicine and the Upper Peninsula Health Education Corporation. The program is one of six community campuses of the College of Human Medicine, located throughout the state. Medical students receive pre-clinical training on campus in East Lansing before starting training at the UP Campus. Students successfully completing the four year program receive diplomas from Michigan State University's College of Human Medicine. The clinical setting for the third year of the pre-doctoral program is in Escanaba and Gladstone family health centers. Community physicians serve as instructors and clinical coordinators in various disciplines. The corporation also provides instruction through its full-time faculty and staff located at Doctors Park in Escanaba. MSU's College of Human Medicine exercises overall control of the curriculum, local faculty are involved in curriculum development and evaluation. During the student's four-year education they are involved in family medicine assignments, home visits, weekly training in Family Health Centers, patient care plans, evaluation procedures and hospital rounds. Following graduation and receiving their MD degrees the students will pursue additional medical training in primary care disciplines at various residency programs nationwide.
