Escanaba is the home of the Upper Peninsula State
Fair, "The Show Place of the Upper Peninsula." Established in 1927, this
exposition has improved annually until it is one of the outstanding fairs in the Middle
West and attendance during fair week has increased to approximately 150,000. Premium
awards of $65,000 are paid annually for premier exhibits of livestock and exceptional
displays of agricultural products, craft work, fine arts, home arts and junior show
exhibits.
The Fair features Michigan manufacturers' industrial
exhibits, youth expositions, competitive events, car racing, horse and tractor and 4-wheel
drive pickup pulling contests and nationally popular musical groups. Other entertainment
attractions staged in front of the grandstand and on the grounds include antique car
displays; van shows; Native American day-, and ladies'day, men's day, youth and senior
citizens program.
Year round, the fairgrounds are utilized by a
variety of individuals or organizations, including national camping raffies; home shows;
sport shows; new auto shows; livestock sales; horse shows and clinics; antique machinery
displays; gem and mineral shows; antique auto shows; musical groups and dancing-,
tournaments; carnivals; pet shows; bingo; Gus Macker; evangelistic crusades; logging
congresses and an indoor ice arena plus private parties and receptions.
The dates of the Upper Peninsula State Fair, usually
occur in the third week in August and runs from Tuesday through Sunday.
