Planning & Zoning

City Hall

The Planning and Zoning Department is responsible for overseeing the land use policies of the City of Escanaba in order to promote the health, safety, and welfare of its citizens.

The foundational aspect of planning is the adoption of the Master Plan, which serves as a guide to the future development of the community. The Planning Commission is tasked with developing the Master Plan with significant input from citizens, demographic and other relevant data, and studies on various topics. Once adopted by the City Council, the Planning Commission is then responsible for implementing the goals of the plan in conjunction with many other city departments and other outside agencies.

In addition to the planning activities, the Planning and Zoning Department is also responsible for administering the Zoning Ordinance, including the review of land-use related permits such as Zoning, Fence, and Sign Permits.
